Deb Lacusta
loving Brando being

January 16 - February 28, 2004

Vedanta Gallery is pleased to announce "loving Brando being" the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles based artist Deb Lacusta.

"loving Brando being", is a multi-media exhibition exploring the fine line between reality, fantasy and the lives of actors using the character of Marlon Brando as a medium. Several videos, drawings and original recordings span through the three rooms of the gallery. Brando is everywhere. The title itself "loving Brando being" is taken from the Gertrude Stein quote "love repeating being" which illustrates the repeating gestures of acting, learning, as well the repetition of love and intimacy.

Lacusta utilizes actors to explore not only acting but also the role of celebrity and the projection of the viewer. The video film titled "Starring Marlon Brando" is an 77-minute long film in which Deb Lacusta is interacting and hanging out with Marlon Brando, but Brando is not there. Only a voice and the point of view of the camera are used to represent his presence. This prolonged play eventually brings the viewer suspending disbelief, believing that the character of Deb is having a relationship with Marlon Brando. The levels of reality continually peel away, revealing more importantly the relationships and connections between actors/friends/lovers. Lacusta, who is trained as an improv actor, explores her skill here as a work of art. Brando is merely a device that ultimately allows for true intimacy and the freedom of play.

Deb Lacusta has exhibited her work at the Museum of Contemporary Art Miami, the UCLA Hammer Museum, Vedanta Gallery, Chicago and Deitch Projects, NY. She is currently part of the Second City Improv Jam in Hollywood and her writing accomplishments include work for The Simpsons and The Tracey Ullman Show.
