Vedanta Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition
in the United States of artist Yannick Demmerle.
Yannick Demmerle's large-scale photographs of forest scenes
are nothing short of those dreamed up in the likes of fairy
tales. Demmerle travels through the forests of Germany, losing
himself in the dense woods photographing the boundless fields
of pines, vast marshes and webs of snow-veiled branches. His
photographs do not represent grand vistas but rather close
scenes of densely populated woods where largely the sky and
horizon are obscured leaving the viewer trapped within an
endless cage of trees.
Yannick Demmerle's work does not claim to be a perfect representation
of nature. Though his use of an 8 x 10" camera provides extreme
clarity and depth, the photographs are taken with long exposures,
which create an enigmatic aura of movement and curiosity.
The morning mist sprinkling the trees, and the gray skies
of dusk or dawn emphasize a feeling of solitude and melancholy.
It is no surprise that Demmerle aligns his work with that
of German romanticists such as Caspar David Friedrich and
Carl Gustav Carus. However, Demmerle's intimate relationship
with nature has an innate contradictory character; innocuous,
tranquil and contemplative at first glance yet lingering with
an anxiety and somber silence.
