Kavi Gupta Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition at the gallery by Chicago-based artist Scott Anderson.
Scott Anderson's futuristic landscapes initially confront the viewer with an incomprehensible space that brings to mind the worlds dreamt up by science fiction with dark lunar skies, space ships, orbs, and bright otherworldly architecture. Though these seem like typical Sci-Fi images, on closer examination unlikely characters are revealed such as log cabins, wild animals, dream catchers, house plants, beer bottles, pyramids; all of the accumulated superfluous imagery of Anderson's database. These are fictional spaces that could almost be described as utopian though no people could actually live here. Animals have survived, and Neanderthals still roam these lost places. The interior and exterior are interrupted, there is nothing solid, as each area of ground seems to melt into another abyss of color. There is no place to stand, no natural light or apparent horizon, and at once there is depth and flatness. Scale fluctuates across the painting leaving one no idea of space, time or dimension, though this instability is the crux of Anderson 's paintings. He creates a cohesive solid environment from a chaotic configuration of space, which could only be dreamed up by the likes of a painter.
